Shopify down as global outage on Cyber Monday sparks fury

Shopify has suffered widespread outages on Cyber Monday - one of the busiest retail days of the year - with the incident being described as 'embarrassing'

Shoppers hunting for bargains on one of the busiest retail days of the year have been hit by a major outage to a large e-commerce platform.

Business owners around the world have reacted with outrage after Shopify experienced widespread outages on Cyber Monday. Thousands of stores started reporting problems with logging into their accounts. Social media users have called the incident as embarrassing.

Investigation continues, Shopify confirms

In their latest update, Shopify said it is continuing to investigate the outage.

It wrote: "We are continuing to investigate and apply mitigations for the issues with accessing Admins and POS systems.

"Some merchants may also see an issue with POS checkouts, due to not being able to access POS systems. Online store checkouts are not affected."

Shopify tells business owners to avoid logging out

In an update issued as the outage continues, Shopify has urged business owners to remain logged in on any devices ad avoid logging out as they may not be able to log back in.

"We are continuing to investigate and apply mitigations for the current issue," the e-commerce company said.

"As noted previously, please remain logged in on any devices that are currently logged in."

Based on Down Detector data, the number of reports on Shopify outages appears to be decreasing.

Business owners express frustration

Business owners have been expressing frustration online and calling for their fees to be refunded after Shopify went down.

"How embarrassing @Shopify has been down all morning on literally the biggest sales day of the year for online shops, specifically SMALL BUSINESSES. They should refund EVERYONES fees this month," one wrote on X.

"We're unable to fulfill all of our orders from Thanksgiving forward until its back up. Ridiculous," they added.

Another said: "We will be asking! This has been a MAJOR DISRUPTION to our business!!!!!!"

One more tweeted: "Shopify going down on Cyber Monday has got to be one of the biggest fails of the year."

Shopify is one of the biggest e-commerce platforms

Shopify is the largest independent e-commerce platform and one of Canada's biggest tech firms.

Valued at 175billion, it is six times bigger than eBay and on Black Friday it helped its five million partners generate nearly 5billion.

Its stock price is up almost 45% since the beginning of the year. Major customers include Tesla, PepsiCo, Lindt, Red Bull and luxury giant LVMH.
