Brazil OUT of World Cup as Erling Haaland destroys Gabriel to send Norway through

BRAZIL 1-2 NORWAY: A late second half brace from Erling Haaland, who got the better of his Arsenal rival Gabriel Magalhaes, condemned Carlo Ancelotti's side to an early exit from the World Cup

One of the Premier League's most entertaining feuds resumed on the international stage as Erling Haaland and Gabriel Magalhaes locked horns again. And it was Haaland who had the last laugh after running riot for Norway to book a potential quarter-final date with England.

Haaland's double condemns Brazil to yet another early World Cup exit. And the inquest for the Samba superstars and their manager, Carlo Ancelotti, will be almost as painful as watching Haaland strut his stuff at their expense here.

The rivalry between Norway's main man and Gabriel dominated the pre-match narrative given their history in some of the recent blockbuster showdowns between Arsenal and Manchester City in the Premier League.

And it was Norway's imperious No 9 who came out on top in the latest chapter of their simmering feud, powering home the header that would clinch Norway a coveted World Cup quarter-final spot for the first time in their history at the expense of Gabriel, who was swatted aside in mid-air.

And the Manchester City star killed off Brazil for good in the 90th minute with a low, driven strike that nestled perfectly inside the bottom corner.

Norway thought they had hit the front after just three minutes, only to be thwarted by the offside flag. Patrick Berg finished brilliantly past Alisson from a pullback in the box, but replays showed a clear offside in the build-up.

Brazil then had a golden opportunity to score from the penalty spot after Kristoffer Ajer felled Matheus Cunha. The referee didn't initially point to the spot, but VAR intervened and sent him to the screen.

Ajer got the barest of touches on the ball but the penalty was given. Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes stepped up but his tame effort from a stuttering run-up was easily saved by Norwegian keeper Orjan Nyland.

Brazil looked the likelier to break the deadlock before the break but Nyland was in the way when called upon, stopping smartly from Vinicius Jr in the closing stages of the first half.

Endrick blew a golden chance to break the deadlock when he was played in on goal shortly after replacing Cunha courtesy of a slick pass from Vinicius Jr, but the prodigious teenager's finish was poor.

Unfortunately for Brazil, they would live to regret it as the inevitable Haaland struck with just 10 minutes of normal time remaining.

Gabriel could hardly hide his dismay as he picked himself up from the turf after being bludgeoned in the air by his rival.

And things were to get even worse for the Brazil defender and his compatriots, who must now face up the chastening fallout of a premature exit from a tournament which is almost synonymous with their success.

Brazil were awarded a penalty in the eighth minute of additional time which was converted by Neymar.

But it was too little too late as Haaland and his team-mates etched themselves into Norwegian history.
