PSG continue to dominate Europe as Aston Villa narrowly beaten in UEFA Super Cup

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN 2-1 ASTON VILLA: The season curtain-raiser between the Champions League holders and the UEFA Cup victors was narrowly won by Luis Enrique's side

Paris Saint-Germain reaffirmed their status as the kings of Europe by beating their former boss, Unai Emery, and Aston Villa 2-1 to win the UEFA Super Cup in Austria.

The UEFA Cup holders lined up below full strength with Emi Martinez, Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins all missing following the World Cup. But even at full strength, Villa would have been up against it playing the team who destroyed some of Europe's elite on their way to winning a second successive Champions League title last season.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia broke the deadlock in style for the French giants 20 minutes in, chopping back onto his right foot on the left-hand side of the penalty area and whipping a ferocious effort past the helpless Marco Bizot. The goal was the Georgian winger's reward for an electric start to proceedings and left Villa with a mountain to climb.

As impressive as PSG looked going forward, it was not all one way traffic; Villa's young guns up front, Brian Madjo and George Hemmings were in the thick of the action with Madjo going close twice in the team's pursuit of an equaliser.

The 17-year-old forward finally got the goal his endeavour deserved on the stroke of half-time when he was picked out by John McGinn. Madjo lashed the ball into the roof of the net, sparking jubilant scenes.

Both teams had chances to nudge ahead as an entertaining second half wore on.

But it was Desire Doue who struck on the hour mark to break Aston Villa hearts, with the goal initially being chalked off for offside. Replays showed the Frenchman was well on, though, as PSG celebrated once more.

Villa continued to push for an equaliser and went agonisingly close when Alysson, a second half substitute, fired a low ball across the penalty area which evaded both Tammy Abraham and Ian Maatsen after good work from the former.

Ousmane Dembele almost added a third for PSG before Emi Buendia spurned a golden chance to equalise in the dying embers of added time, heading a dangerous cross wide.
