England star Jordan Henderson suffered an injury after the Three Lions' win over Mexico at the World Cup
Everything you need to know about Jordan Henderson's injury history
- Wrist injury in Mexico: During the post-match celebrations following England's 3-2 victory over Mexico at the World Cup 2026, Jordan Henderson suffered a wrist injury after tumbling over an advertising hoarding. He was given oxygen on the pitch, carried off on a stretcher, and kept in hospital overnight for further assessment, casting major doubt on his remaining tournament participation.
- Metatarsal fracture at Coventry City: In 2009, early in his professional career, while on loan at Championship side Coventry City, a teenage Henderson suffered a fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone in his foot. This bone break abruptly ended the loan spell, forcing him to return to his parent club Sunderland prematurely to begin his road to recovery.
- Persistent plantar fasciitis in 2015: After taking over the Liverpool captaincy in 2015, Henderson was plagued by the heel condition plantar fasciitis. This nerve tissue inflammation required specialised treatment and careful load management to keep his career on track.
- Broken bone in right foot: While recovering from his chronic heel issue in September 2015, Henderson suffered a completely separate and agonising setback during a training session. He sustained a fracture to a bone in his right foot, which required immediate surgery and unfortunately extended his time on the treatment table for several more months.
- Season-ending knee ligament damage: In April 2016, during a Europa League quarter-final first-leg clash against Borussia Dortmund, the midfielder suffered a serious knee ligament injury. The damage was severe enough to rule him out for the remainder of the domestic season, although he miraculously recovered just in time to be selected for the Euro 2016 squad.
- Prolonged ankle injury in 2017: A mysterious and stubborn foot and ankle injury sidelined the experienced midfielder from February 2017 all the way through to the end of that Premier League campaign. The persistent nature of the problem frustrated both the player and the medical staff, as he was forced to sit out crucial matches while completely resting the joint to allow it to heal properly.
- Hamstring tear over the festive period: During a frenetic 3-3 draw against Arsenal in December 2017, Henderson pulled up sharply clutching the back of his leg just minutes into the match. Scans later revealed a grade-two tear in his right hamstring, forcing him to miss a busy and physically demanding month of winter fixtures whilst undergoing intensive physiotherapy.
- Knee issue against Barcelona: During the famous Champions League semi-final comeback against Barcelona in May 2019, Henderson suffered a painful knee injury in the first half following a heavy collision. Despite the obvious discomfort, he required painkilling injections at half-time and bravely played through the pain barrier to help captain his side to a historic 4-0 aggregate victory.
- Groin injury in early 2021: In February 2021, the midfielder sustained a severe groin injury that required surgical intervention and a lengthy rehabilitation programme. This significant setback kept him sidelined for over three months, meaning he missed crucial Premier League and Champions League fixtures for Liverpool before returning just in time for the delayed Euro 2020 tournament.
