Fans spot blatant error on Match of the Day minutes before Gary Lineker's emotional farewell

Viewers were quick to spot a sloppy mistake involving the introduction to Ipswich vs West Ham on Sunday night during Gary Lineker's final time hosting Match of the Day

Gary Lineker's final time hosting Match of the Day did not go off without a hitch, as irritated viewers picked up on a sloppy mistake. Lineker waved goodbye from the BBC's iconic Premier League highlights show on Sunday night in an emotional broadcast to mark the end of the season.

The programme was packed with tributes to the 64-year-old, who is stepping down after 25 years at the helm. Lineker was presented with a commemorative cap and a Golden Boot by pundits Alan Shearer and Micah Richards and received a video message from Andrea Bocelli, who had marked Leicester's title win in 2016.

Lineker managed to hold back the tears while getting emotional at the end of the show, but many of those watching at home had already been left annoyed by an error beforehand.

The penultimate game of the bumper edition, which contained 10 matches, was Ipswich vs West Ham. Introducing the game, Lineker said: "Relegated Ipswich signed off from the Premier League looking to end a run of eight straight defeats at Portman Road, West Ham were their opponents. James Fielden was watching."

But as he was speaking, the graphic behind him showed Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna opposite Everton manager David Moyes, instead of West Ham's Graham Potter. It didn't take long for the error to be spotted and pointed out on social media.

"Err...@BBCMOTD David Moyes isn't our manager!" one West Ham fan wrote on X. "Why did MOTD graphic have David Moyes as West Ham Manager?" another questioned. "Picture of David Moyes for the West Ham game fellas?? @BBCMOTD" a third noted.

The error was clearly from the production staff, who had forgot to update the graphic for the West Ham manager, with Moyes having previously taken charge of the club. Thankfully, Hammers fans were happier with what followed: a 3-1 win for their side to round off a disappointing campaign.

Once Bournemouth's 2-0 win over Leicester was out of the way, Lineker took centre stage again to say farewell before being replaced by Gabby Logan, Mark Chapman and Kelly Cates for the 2025/26 season.

"Let me take this opportunity to thank all of the other pundits that I've had the pleasure of working with over the last 25 years, you've made my job so much easier," he said.

"Also, a huge thank you to those you don't see at home: the work that goes into making this iconic show is a huge team effort. From the editors, to the analysis team, from the commentators to the floor managers, from the producers to the camera operators, from the PAs to the subs, thank you all, you're the very best.

"Rather like my football career, everyone else did all the hard work and I got the plaudits. It's been an absolute privilege to host Match of the Day for a quarter of a century. It's been utterly joyous. I'd like to wish Gabby, Mark and Kelly for when they sit in this chair - the programme is in the best of hands.

"And my final thank you goes to all of you. Thank you for watching. Thank you for all of your love and support over the years. It's been so special - and I'm sorry that your team was always on last. Time to say goodbye. Goodbye."
