Myles Lewis-Skelly has made it clear he wants to play in midfield after Arsenal offered the teenager to rivals Manchester United and Chelsea.
The surprise move comes with the 19-year-old's minutes at the Emirates limited and the signing of Bruno Guimaraes could have further impact that, whilst also closing off the avenue that the academy graduate ultimately wants to pursue.
Lewis-Skelly only agreed a new contract last summer but could end up at another Premier League club, although there is no indication yet over whether United or the Blues will act on Arsenal's offer, as reports football.london.
Michael Carrick's side are looking to sign a midfielder and a left-back before the summer transfer window closes and Lewis-Skelly is capable of playing in both positions - but has made it known that he sees himself as a midfielder.
When he first came into the Arsenal team the teenager filled in at left-back, but always had ambitions to move more central. He ultimately started the Champions League final in May alongside Declan Rice in the middle of the park for the Gunners.
Speaking to Arsenal's official website previously Lewis-Skelly has said: "My best position is either a No 6 or No 8. Im not too sure yet, but Im just continuing to try my best to master both. Whatever it takes, Im ready to play in the [No] 6 or [No] 8 role."
Arsenal's signing of Guimaraes means the 19-year-old has the likes of the Brazilian, Rice, Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi to compete with for a starting berth. But that could be a problem for him wherever he goes given the midfield depth in Manchester and west London.
Chelsea's midfield partnership of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo is seen as one of the league's best. Fernandez is heavily linked with the exit door, but Xabi Alonso wants to retain him. Even beyond that duo, the Blues have the likes of Romeo Lavia whilst Reece James has also stepped into midfield.
At Old Trafford Michael Carrick has made midfield recruits his priority this summer. Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have come through the door with Kobbie Mainoo already in the building. Bruno Fernandes ' role as a 10 means that United only play with two central midfielders, increasing the competition for places.
