The stars of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf will compete for bragging rights on Tuesday evening as Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler team up against Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau.
The players who collectively own 13 major titles will meet at Shadow Greek Golf Club in Las Vegas on Tuesday for "The Showdown", a made-for-TV matchplay event inspired by the Ryder Cup.
World No. 1 Scheffler and four-time major champion McIlroy represent the PGA Tour, while reigning US Open champion DeChambeau and five-time major winner Koepka will fly the flag for the breakaway league.
The existence of the match itself is a sign of the rapidly changing times in men's professional golf. With the PGA Tour and LIV Golf's backer, the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, edging closer to striking a peace deal, the game's leading players have jumped at the opportunity to capitalize on the sense of rivalry and intrigue for what promises to be a captivating event.
Here is a breakdown of the rules of The Showdown...
The event will be contested under matchplay rules, meaning the team that wins the most holes rather than the one with the lowest score will take the victory.
The opening six holes will be fourballs, with each player playing their own ball and the best scores from each team being counted. Holes seven to 12 will be foursomes, when the teams share a ball and take alternate shots.
The final six holes will be played under the floodlights as singles. The details are yet to be confirmed, but it is likely each player will contest three holes each.
The prize money on offer is yet to be confirmed, but title sponsor Crypto.com has confirmed the victorious team will receive its winnings in cryptocurrency. Unconfirmed reports suggest as much as $10millon (7.9m) could be on the line at Shadow Creek.
The Showdown is due to begin at 11pm GMT, with TNT holding the broadcast rights in the United States and United Kingdom. The event is set to be broadcast live on TNT Sports and the Discovery Plus streaming platform, although a specific channel and start time are yet to be confirmed.
Former Masters champion Trevor Immelman will be part of the broadcast crew, as will LIV Golf commentator David Feherty and NBA icon and golf fanatic Charles Barkley. Inside The NBA anchor Ernie Johnson will lead the coverage.
