Patrick Mahomes joins exclusive club after leading Kansas City Chiefs to Super Bowl glory

Patrick Mahomes became the first player to win back-to-back Super Bowl MVPs since Terry Bradshaw in 1979 and 1980 with a 25-22 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers

Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, has made history by becoming the first player to win the Super Bowl MVP award two years in a row since 1980.

The last person to achieve this was former Pittsburgh Steelers passer Terry Bradshaw back in 1979 and 1980. Mahomes led his team to a 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. He threw the game-winning touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman in overtime.

Mahomes, who is now a three-time Super Bowl MVP, ended the big game in Las Vegas with impressive stats: 34-for-46 passing with 333 yards through the air, two touchdowns, an interception, and he also ran for 66 yards.

This isn't the first time Mahomes has won the Super Bowl MVP award. He took home the trophy last year after defeating the Philadelphia Eagles, and he won it during his first championship run in 2020 against the 49ers.

With his latest performance, Mahomes is now being seriously considered as one of the greatest players of all time. "It's the start of (a dynasty)," Mahomes told CBS after the game. "We are not done."

Mahomes has now joined the exclusive club of five NFL starting quarterbacks who have won at least three Super Bowls. This includes Troy Aikman (three), Terry Bradshaw (four), Joe Montana (four) and Tom Brady (seven, more than any other player).

Only Brady managed to win his third Super Bowl at a younger age than Mahomes, achieving this feat at 27 compared to Mahomes' 28. However, even Brady didn't manage to secure consecutive Super Bowl MVP trophies.

Kansas City's offence was slow to start in Sunday's game, only managing to score three points in the first half as the 49ers put up a strong defence, despite an odd injury to linebacker Dre Greenlaw. But after scoring a touchdown late in the third quarter, Mahomes seemed to find his stride, even with a streaker trying to interrupt the game.

The 49ers found themselves in a tough spot when they failed to score a touchdown on the opening overtime possession. They had to settle for a 27-yard field goal from rookie kicker Jake Moody, who had previously had an extra-point attempt blocked but successfully made all three of his field goals.

Mahomes responded with a 13-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a memorable throw to an open Hardman, who came second only to Travis Kelce in receiving yardage.
