Wu Yize has revealed the sacrifices of his hospitalised mum which led him to become World Champion.
The Chinese kid completed his dream by winning at the Crucible and becoming his countrys second-successive champ after Zhao Xintong 12 months ago. Now 22 years of age, hes lived in Sheffield for six years having upped sticks from home town Lanzhou and travelling to Yorkshire with his dad Wu Jianguo.
Mother Guo Ping stayed at home in Asia, yet just two years into a tough start to life in England for the teenager, she had health troubles and was in hospital. However, rather than ask the boy and father to come home, she refused to entertain that notion and told them to stay put in the UK almost 6,000 miles away to hunt down her son's dreams.
It paid off in spectcular fashion with mum and dad in tears at the Crucible as her lad sank Shaun Murphy to lift the silverware.
Yize lifted the lid on the back story as outlined in The Daily Record, saying: My mum wasnt in a very good health condition for a long time.
"During that time, when we were in Sheffield, she had been staying a lot in the hospital, so shes forever the source of strength to me.
She sacrificed everything for me. At that time, she told me: Dont come back home, I can manage everything. It was the second year I was training and playing in the UK.
"At that time my ranking was very low, so it was a very crucial time for me to achieve some good results to keep my professional status. She means everything to me.
Shes been feeling much better now. This is the second time shes been visiting me in the UK. I think in the future, I will take her more to be by my side.
Dad, of course, has always been there and its was tough going in the beginning. Living in a tiny room without windows and even sleeping in the same bed at times, it would have been easy to quit.
But he said: I never had a thought about giving up. Obviously at that time, it was a very tough moment in my life.
Living in a poor condition like that, I had so much acne, maybe because of the air-conditioned infections.
But I think thats the strength Ive built over the years. If you really love sport, thats the path you have to go through and fight through.
Yize had stated prior to the Final he would use some of his 500,000 winners cheque to get a house for his parents and he confirmed afterwards: I will probably buy here in the UK because, as a professional athlete, most of the time Im training and playing here. After that, its going to be future plans.
For now, its about savouring the success. Yize is travelling home, but hell soon be straight back to work.
He said: I will give myself a few days off, maybe 10 days or a few more days. After that, I will go back to training because as a professional snooker player, when everything is already in the past, you have to move on and do your best again.
I will travel back to China and I will celebrate with my family and friends. And then after that, I will go back to training.
Its typical of the work-ethic which has taken Xintong and now Yize to the top and the floodgates are open as the 2026 champ said: I would hope so, because the Chinese players have been making so many improvements. I think more and more Chinese players can win this World Championship. The best is still yet to come for Chinese snooker.
