Jannik Sinner responds after Australian Open opponent quits first round match in tears

Jannik Sinner is looking for a third straight championship at the Australian Open and is on a 16-match winning streak

Jannik Sinner was fit and firing as he started his quest for a third straight Australian Open title against Hugo Gaston. But the No.2 seeds opening match was cut short when Frenchman Gaston retired in tears while Sinner led 6-2 6-1.

This was the Italians first match since early November, and he is now on a 16-match winning streak after ending last year with titles in Vienna, Paris and Turin. The two-time reigning champion in Melbourne Park said: I was very happy. We put in a lot of work to be back on court. It felt great.

Obviously not the way you want to win the match. I wish him a speedy recovery and hope it's nothing too bad. For me was just a general feeling to be back competing.

I've put in many, many long days in the off-season trying to become a better tennis player. But at end of the day the most important part is to go on court and to enjoy. It's very special to start the season in a night session match here in a Grand Slam.

But it wasnt smooth sailing for 2025 womens singles champion Madison Keys.

The No.9 seed went 0-4 down in her first-round match against Oleksandra Oliynykova and saved two set points in a tiebreak before winning 7-6 6-1.

Former world No.1 Karolina Pliskova made a winning return to competition. Playing her first tour-level match since she got injured at the 2024 US Open and retired after playing just three points, Pliskova beat former US Open winner Sloane Stephens 7-6 6-2.

And French star Gael Monfils has played his final match at the Australian Open. The former world No.6 will retire this season, and suffered a 6-7 7-5 6-4 7-5 defeat to Aussie qualifier Dane Sweeny.
