Why Arthur Fery has been getting so many nosebleeds at Wimbledon

  1. Wimbledon medical struggle: British tennis player Arthur Fery has dealt with persistent nosebleedsmost notably during his dramatic run at Wimbledondue to a physical issue that has become increasingly troublesome during the grass-court season.
  2. A recurring tournament issue: While Fery noted that the problem isn't usually a common occurrence for him long-term, it's "dogged" him throughout the tournament. Medically, frequent nosebleeds in athletes during specific seasons are often triggered by a combination of issues.
  3. Environmental and physical triggers: High pollen counts and dry summer air during the grass-court season can dry out and irritate the sensitive nasal membranes. The extreme cardiovascular strain of multi-hour, five-set tennis matches also spikes blood pressure, making the delicate, dried-out blood vessels in the nose much more prone to bursting.
  4. Disrupted momentum on court: During his gruelling, four-and-a-half-hour third-round victory over Zizou Bergs, Fery suffered three separate nosebleeds that required medical timeouts to stop the bleeding. Because it has disrupted his momentum and frustrated opponents, Fery has stated that it is a specific medical issue he intends to address and seek treatment for after the tournament concludes.
  5. Quarter-final clash on the horizon: Undergoing treatment for those nosebleeds is highly unlikely to take place anytime soon with Fery still in the tournament. He faces Flavio Cobolli in the quarter-finals on Wednesday with their huge Centre Court clash scheduled to start at 14:40.
  6. Upcoming opponent in depth: Cobolli knocked out Alex de Minaur in the fourth round with a straight-sets victory and is seemingly hitting form at the perfect time with the Italian aiming to get to another Grand Slam final. He was beaten by Alexander Zverev at the French Open last month, but his strong performances at Roland Garros resulted in him breaking into the top 10.
  7. Unbelieveable path to final: If Fery overcomes the No.9 seed and reaches the Wimbledon semi-finals, he will face either Zverev or Taylor Fritz, with Novak Djokovic or Jannik Sinner awaiting him in the final if he sensationally wins his next two matches.
  8. A historic milestone: He is the first British male wildcard to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon with Andrew Foster the last to even reach the previous round back in 1993. This incredible 33-year milestone highlights just how rare it is for an unseeded home favourite to crash the tournament's second week.
  9. Career-defining ranking surge: His live ranking has rocketed to world No. 63, breaking him into the top 100 for the first time in his career. This guarantees him direct entry into the upcoming US Open without needing to play qualifiers.
