When a trip to Italy turned out to be cheaper than a day out in London, there was no hesitation for one traveller.

As the capital of the UK, it's no surprise that London can be a notoriously expensive day out, especially when you add food, shopping and sightseeing into the mix. So instead of forking out for a day in the city, Rhys Kelly booked a bargain flight to Milan.

The 18-year-old booked flights for just 20 and spent an exciting day exploring the beautiful city of Milan. From visiting iconic landmarks and enjoying a cycle ride to eating the local delicacies, Rhys certainly made the most of his 11 hours in the Italian city before flying home that same day.

In total, the whirlwind trip set Rhys back 115 - cheaper than what it would have cost him for a day out in London! "This is the day trip you dont want to miss out on," the university student in Nottingham told creatorzine.com.

"If youre in uni, you can do this during the week thats when its going to be the cheapest because obviously youve got time to spare. And Milan is a very small city, so 24 hours is enough time.

"In one day, you can get everything done pizza, pasta, ice cream, see the Duomo."

Ditching the UK for a day trip abroad, Rhys found cheap flights from London Heathrow to Milan on Skyscanner, departing early in the morning and returning later that same evening. After landing at Malpensa Airport, Rhys, along with some friends, caught a train into the city centre and hired out e-bikes with Dott bikes for just 5 (4.32) to take in the sights.

"The highlight of the trip was definitely cycling around on Dott bikes as we got to see the majority of the city all within a small frame of time," Rhys shared. "We had around 11 hours to explore as we had to travel back to the airport for our flight."

During the day, Rhys and his friends admired some of Milan's most famous attractions, including the magnificent Duomo Cathedral. And of course, no trip to Italy is complete without pizza, which set Rhys back just 9 (7.78), and was "probably the best valued thing there", he revealed.

They also had time to browse the lavish shops of Prada, Stssy and Supreme in the fashion capital, before tucking into some Italian ice cream before heading back to the airport for their flight home. While his total excluded some of his retail purchases, Rhys was more than happy with his spending, and believes travellers could do it for even less.

He shared: "I spent money in Supreme, which you dont have to do. So realistically, if you wanted to go as cheaply as possible, you could get a day trip for 60."
