Nestled on England's east coast, this hidden gem has been crowned the number one pub in the UK at the 2026 Pub Awards and it's well worth the trip.

Pub culture is deeply woven into the fabric of British life, with many Brits willing to travel the length and breadth of the country to discover a new favourite local or tick off a must-visit spot. For those eager to make the pilgrimage to what is now officially the UK's best pub, Norfolk is your destination.

Claiming the top honour at the National Pub and Bar Awards 2026 is a traditional boozer in Cromer, Norfolk The Gunton Arms. Situated just a 15-minute drive from the nearest beach, it's the perfect place to wind down after a glorious day spent exploring the stunning coastline.

It boasts all the hallmarks of a quintessentially British pub, from a pool table and dartboard to a cracking beer garden. Yet it's the quirky interiors and contemporary atmosphere that truly set it apart from the competition and helped it edge out the other top contenders.

The award-winning establishment was founded back in 2011 by former art dealer Ivor Braka, and the building reflects his roots with an impressive collection of modern art.

Guests can expect to admire works by the likes of Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst, while tucking into dishes crafted by celebrated chef Stuart Tattersall.

A recent guest shared their experience at the Norfolk pub in a glowing TripAdvisor review, writing: "The Gunton Arms remains my absolute favourite restaurant, and every visit reminds me why. From the moment you arrive, the setting is simply breathtaking.

"Nestled within a magnificent deer park, the views are stunning and create a truly unique atmosphere that feels both relaxed and special. The food is consistently excellent. Every dish is beautifully prepared, full of flavour, and served to a remarkably high standard."

Another satisfied diner added: "Lovely shabby chic environment, absolutely amazing food served by friendly, knowledgeable, attentive staff. We took our dog, who was also welcomed. A truly enjoyable experience."

It's evident that the venue has won over not just industry critics but also ordinary pub-goers and food enthusiasts, who rave about its "quirky" character and rustic charm. Its location certainly helps the pub sits within a sprawling historic 18th-century estate, where majestic deer roam freely.

As for the menu, the pub takes pride in using locally sourced ingredients and seasonal produce, with some elements drawn directly from the estate. Their beef comes from the local herd and is cooked over an open fire, while their seafood is supplied by fishermen along the Cromer coast.

Describing their meal, one diner said: "The service was attentive and friendly throughout and the food... just amazing. An interesting menu with something for everyone, delicious food, cooked with love and so well-presented."

Visitors can transform a visit to one of Britain's finest pubs into a full getaway, as accommodation and a guest house are available on the estate. Contributing further to its understated elegance, the rooms feature a selection of distinctive textiles, period furniture, and colour schemes designed to create a memorable experience unlike any other.
