Coronation Street viewers are hoping that Tracy Barlow and Steve McDonald will get back together after a telling scene aired on Tuesday's episode of the world's longest-running TV soap

Coronation Street fans think Steve McDonald and Tracy Barlow could be about to reunite in what could lead to a new record for the soap. The taxi driver, played by Simon Gregson, had an on/off relationship with Tracy (Kate Ford) in the early 2000s, and they went on to have daughter Amy (Elle Mulvaney) together.

They tied the knot for the first time in 2012, although this union lasted a matter of hours, as Tracy's nemesis Becky McDonald (Katherine Kelly) revealed to the wedding party at the reception that Tracy had wrongly accused her of pushing her down the stairs and caused her to suffer a miscarriage. Years later, Steve gave her another chance, and they married for a second time in 2018 but it fell apart once again when it emerged that Tracy had been having an affair with former footballer Tommy Orpington.

The pair recently finalised their divorce but still live together at number one , as the property is owned by Tracy's adoptive father Ken Barlow (William Roache) and he invited Steve to move in. However, Steve is currently in a relationship with Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney) and she had been planning to propose, until he received a phone call telling him that his father Jim had died.

Cassie was just about to propose to Steve when he received a call telling him his father had died

On Tuesday's episode of the world's longest-running TV soap, Tracy took it upon herself to tell Steve of Cassie's plans. She told him: "She had it all planned out outside Victoria Gardens. Then you get the call, it's, 'Abort, abort!' That's why she was so dressed up. Anyway, I just thought you should know with everything that's going on with your dad."

Displaying a rare act of kindness, Tracy put her arms out to Steve and pulled him in for a quick hug to comfort him. Fans of the ITV programme may already know that Claire Sweeney is leaving the soap to star in a nationwide tour of the musical Annie, and bosses have promised a "great exit storyline" for the character, so presumably, the wedding will not go ahead.

This has prompted some fans to wonder if yet another reunion is on the cards for Steve and Tracy, which would set a record for the programme if a wedding goes ahead, as no couple have been married three times before. Other show legends like Ken and Deirdre Barlow, Sally and Kevin Webster and Brian and Gail Tilsey all tied the knot twice, but no couple has ever gone back for a third go at marriage.

One hopeful fan wrote on Reddit: "Did anyone else think after today there's a possibility that Steve and Tracy could reunite? There was that odd moment she decided to tell him Cassie was about to propose, and then hugged him. We know the actress is leaving. Wonder if Steve McDonald could be the first man on Coronation Street to marry the same woman three times?

"Did think it was also a bit weird that Cassie mentioned the divorce had gone through so quickly the other week given it was a such a major dispute for a while."

The idea clearly went down well with fellow viewers, as one simply said: "Hope they do," and another said: "I do, too! Another user explained: "Well they should never have broken them up anyway. It was a stupid decision! Tracy fell for Steve practically the first time she met him.

"He stopped Andy bullying her and she became besotted practically on the spot. It's absolutely no coincidence that no matter what they constantly find their way back together because their is 20 years worth of writing behind their very first doomed wedding.

"Just generally I think they're a good pairing too. Tracy is less poisonous when she's with Steve and Steve is a determined hard working guy who could go very far, he just needs somebody to keep him on track and help him best use his entrepreneurial mind."

If Steve does tie the knot again, it will be for the eighth time, and he will also become the most-married character in the 65-year history of the soap, a record he currently holds jointly with Gail Platt (Helen Worth), who left Weatherfield on Christmas Day 2024.
