The new series from the creator of Narcos is set in 1980s New York.

MGM+ has dropped a gripping first-look trailer for an upcoming crime drama that Peaky Blinders and The Sopranos fans wont want to miss.

Starring JK Simmons (Whiplash, Invincible), the eight-part drama takes viewers back to New York City in the 1980s and chronicles a war between the Italian mafia, the FBI, and a notorious Irish gang.

The Westies stars Simmons as the gangs formidable leader Eamonn Sweeney alongside a cast that also includes Titus Welliver, Tom Brittney, Stanley Morgan, Sarah Bolger, and Jessica Frances Dukes.

Legendary TV writer Chris Brancato created and is executive producing the series with co-creator Michael Panes. Brancato is best known for his hit crime dramas Godfather of Harlen and the award-winning Narcos.

A synopsis for the upcoming series reads: The Westies is a gritty and kinetic crime drama centring on New York Citys infamously violent Irish gang of the same name.

The series is set in the early 1980s, when the construction of the Jacob Javits Convention Center on the Westies home turf in Hells Kitchen promises a financial windfall.

Despite being outnumbered fifty-to-one by the Five Families of the Italian Mafia, the Westies legendary brutality and cunning have given them the leverage necessary to share the spoils through a fragile dtente.

But internal conflict between the brash younger generation and the old-school leadership threatens to set a match to this powder keg, which will sweep the Westies into the FBIs ever-deepening investigation into the Italian mafia.

Among the stellar cast, Grantchester fans will certainly recognise British star Tom Brittney who portrayed Reverend Will Davenport from 2019-2023 on ITVs hit period detective drama.

The first season of The Westies will consist of eight episodes and will be released on MGM+ worldwide on 12th July with a two-part premiere.

An exhilarating teaser released this week promises plenty of action, corruption, and brutal violence as the Westies, based on a real-life crime family, exert their dominance over Hells Kitchen.
