Vera fans missing the police series can get their fix from another "gripping" crime drama that should fill the gap.

Detective show Redemption can be watched on ITVX and it's likely to appeal to fans of Vera, which wrapped up last year with DCI Vera Stanhope star Brenda Blethyn deciding it was time to move on.

Redemption also focuses on a female detective, with Paula Malcomson playing DI Colette Cunningham, who discovers her estranged daughter Kate has died by suicide, reports Dublin Live.

Kate vanished without trace aged 17 and had been residing in Dublin for the past 20 years under the name Stacey Lockley. Colette then becomes guardian to Stacey's teenage children, Cara and Liam.

"Joining the Dublin Central police service, Colette adjusts to life in Dublin and her new role as grandparent," a synopsis says.

"Curious about who her daughter became, something about Stacey's final month doesn't seem to add up and Colette sets out to uncover the truth behind her daughter's death."

One fan posted a review on IMDb.com saying the show, which first aired in 2022 and also stars Keith McErlean, was "gripping, tense" and "edge of the seat".

"Loved this Irish series," said another. "Kept me invested in each and every character through marvellous acting and storyline. I particularly loved the female boss of Colette who through nuanced acting was compassionate but wanted to do things by the book."

"Great writing and wonderful acting," said someone else. "Realistic way of managing grief. Everything was spot on from Colette's boss, sidekick, two children, and the nasty villains. Nothing over the top."

Keith McErlean also stars in the series

Another posted: "Interesting characters and story that kept my interest for six episodes. Well acted, directed and written with central character who holds it together with emotionally satisfying performance, and believable as a cop with some family baggage in her past.

"Secondary characters are equally well done, especially the two teenage kids. The last episode is nail-biting, edge of your seat suspense.

"Most important, I really cared about the people being portrayed, which is not always the case in a detective drama."

Redemption is available on ITVX
