Grantchester star Al Weaver appeared on Alan Titchmarsh's Love Your Weekend on Sunday to chat about the ITV series as it comes to an end.

Al, who plays Leonard Finch, told Alan he loves playing a "troubled soul". He said, "I mean, when we started, he was kind of just the comedy relief, along with Tessa and a couple of other people. It was kind of just all sorts of light stuff.

"But then it started going into his sort of personal life and his sexuality and all that sort of stuff, and then they just keep throwing everything at him, and it's great, because for me, every year we come back and we talk about it in the offseason and say, 'What can we do?'

"But again, you know, this year we find him, and he's really happy, as happy as he can be, and then he is dissatisfied, and then some else happens.

"And but for me, it's a great joy to just kind of navigate all those different things that we all experience."

After playing a clip of Al's first episode, in which he donned a moustache, the actor shared his fear of being fired from his role.

"I'd forgotten about the moustache," Alan said afterwards, to which Al replied, "We had all forgotten the moustache."

"Yeah, that lasted one episode," the actor laughed as Alan asked, "Did you have it when you went in, or did you grow it for it?"

As Al confirmed he grew the moustache for the script, he explained, "And it takes me a while to grow a moustache, and then you shave it off after a day.

"But I remember that was my first day, the first time I had met James [Norton] at the read-through, but that was our first scene together.

"And, they put the stuff on, did my hair, did the moustache, and I thought I was gonna get fired. Honestly, I was just like, I look ridiculous."

He added, "I thought, 'This is it. I'm just gonna walk on set, and they'll be like, we've made a mistake."

However, despite his fears, the Grantchester star said the producers at the time thought it was "perfect".
