ITV star Susanna Reid found herself in an awkward clash with a guest.

The 55-year-old presenter returned to host Good Morning Britain on Wednesday (July 22), alongside Ed Balls. The duo were live in the central London studio to deliver the day's biggest headlines.

Much of today's discussion centred around cabinet ministers Wes Streeting and Shabana Mahmood, after they were heard talking about the early prisoner release scheme with the new Justice Secretary Alex Norris.

In a video, published by Guido Fawkes, the new defence secretary, Streeting, could be heard saying that "he wants to let them all out" - appearing to reference the government's plans for early release for prisoners.

Both Streeting and Mahmood have since apologised for the comments caught in the video, with both labelling the early release scheme a "serious issue". Susanna mentioned the comments during an interview with Reform MP Robert Jenrick later in the show.

"I think it's an absolute disgrace that we're in this situation as a country due to failure after failure by the last Conservative government and now by this Labour one," Jenrick began.

Susanna asked if the former Conservative MP felt a "sense of shame" after he was a minister in the Home Office when the prison release policies were discussed.

Jenrick soon claimed that Susanna was absolving the government, saying: "I wouldn't absolve this government of responsibility as you seem to be doing."

Susanna quickly hit back: "Since when did I absolve... Sorry, Mr Jenrick, when did I absolve this government of [responsibility]? No, but don't make a criticism of me that is untrue. When have I absolved this government of responsibility?"

Jenrick replied: "Because most of this conversation has been about the past rather than the present."

Susanna continued to explain: "Because you are part of the past government, that's why. I interview people all the time about this early release scheme, and I would say that our viewers are extremely critical of this scheme.

"What I'm asking you is the responsibility of the previous government, which has got us here and which you were a part [of]." She added: "Don't make a false accusation against me."

At the end of the interview, Ed Balls thanked Jenrick for his time, before the MP could be heard saying: "Well, that was a waste of time." Ed quickly disagreed, saying: "I think it wasn't a waste of time."
