The film has been described as "underrated"

A superhero movie featuring many of the iconic characters has been hailed as 'underrated' by film fans, and it's on ITV2 today.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, released in 2016, sees Gotham's vigilante Batman viewing Superman as a dangerous, god-like threat after the Metropolis devastation, leading to a personal crusade to stop him, while the manipulative Lex Luthor fuels their conflict and seeks Kryptonite.

The film eventually forces the heroes to unite with Wonder Woman to battle Luthor's monstrous creation, Doomsday, saving humanity from mutual destruction and setting the stage for the Justice League. The film stars Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman, alongside an ensemble cast including Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Gal Gadot and Diane Lane.

To star in this film, some of the stars underwent transformations including Ben Affleck to play Batman, which saw him gain 20 pounds of muscle and train extensively, and in doing so he also became the oldest actor at 43 to play Batman in a movie at the time of release.

He wasn't the only one who changed with Gal Gadot also adding 17 pounds of muscle to bulk up for her role as Wonder Woman.

The film has had mixed ratings and reviews, with film website Rotten Tomatoes seeing it only get 28% on the Tomatometer.

However some film fans are championing the film as one positive review posted: "Amazing ! Underrated!!! Too complex for average viewers! The directors cut is best!"

Another said: "I never understood the negativity to this film. I was looking forward to the two heroes in one film for the first time and I was not disappointed. Great action, looked amazing, and the cast of what would have been the new DC universe left me very surprisingly pleased.

"The extended cut was definitely better as it clarified things a little better and made things make more sense, thus making a better film. A much longer film, however, that felt very long too, but overall Im still pleased and wished they had continued this DC universe. It starts out strong."

"I think this is the best Superman and best Bat man character renditions. Not sure why the critics hated it but this was a super entertaining movie. Great graphics and fight sequences. Ill watch it again and again," said one review that rated it five stars.

One lengthy review posted: "Visuals: 10/10 Dark, stylish, almost mythic. Every frame looks like a graphic novel come to life. Soundtrack: 10/10 Zimmer and Junkie XL go crazy here. The Batman theme, Wonder Womans entrance pure chills. Action: 9/10 The warehouse scene alone is legendary.

"The final battle is huge and chaotic in a good way. Story: 7.5/10 Ambitious, heavy, and symbolic, but sometimes a bit messy. Still, it has a lot more depth than most superhero movies. Performances: 9/10 Affleck is a brutal, angry Batman. Cavill continues his grounded, emotional Superman. Gal Gadots Wonder Woman steals every scene. Overall, 8.5/10."

Another review posted: "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" is underrated for exploring the consequences of the destruction caused by superheroes, however a miscast Lex Luthor definitely hinders the film's performance."
