Possession

Theres an established strain of gothic horror in which a solicitor is dispatched to a lonely house to untangle the affairs of the dead. But where Possessions Claudia (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) parts company with figures like Jonathan Harker in Dracula or Arthur Kipps in The Woman in Black is that, as a dual-heritage woman, her identity in the present day becomes central to the inheritance she has been sent to unravel.

The assignment takes her from the UK to Hope Hill, a Jamaican plantation owned until his recent death by a British aristocrat. His son (Jonny Lee Miller) expects to inherit, only to discover the estate has been left to the enigmatic Cudjoe East (Sheldon Shepherd), who appears to have come from nowhere.

No sooner has Claudia arrived than the past begins to seep into the here and now. Ghostly echoes of the 18th century invade the landscape, while long-buried truths about slavery demand to be confronted.
