Men and women live in a giant silo underground with several regulations which they believe are in place to protect them from the toxic and ruined world on the surface.
Theres no skimping on the budget for this sci-fi epic, based on the books by Hugh Howey. David Oyelowo, Rebecca Ferguson and Tim Robbins lead a strong cast, playing the inhabitants of a mysterious underground mega-bunker, apparently constructed in the wake of an apocalypse.
This functioning but ineffably sinister community impressively realised on screen has folklore going back decades, built around the idea that the outside world is a toxic hellscape. But is it all a lie? The dramas well acted and the grubby steampunk aesthetic is appealing, but the pace is sluggish and for a long time its unclear whats really at stake.
