Hayden was a well-known campaigner for animal welfare, once paddling through blood-stained waters in Japan to stare down dolphin hunters during their animal massacres.

The act was filmed as part of the 2009 documentary The Cove, which went on to win the Oscar for best documentary feature.

The actress frequently denounced marine parks such as SeaWorld, calling their confinement of complex, far-ranging marine animals “disgusting”.

“Hayden Panettiere became a household name playing a hero on TV, but in real life she was a hero to animals,” PETA wrote on Instagram alongside a video of the new campaign.

“You can hear the emotion in her voice as she urges others to stand with her and help end this cruelty.”

The charity lauded the campaign as “one of the last acts of her short, impactful life.”

A PETA representative told Page Six that the video was shot on July 22 and that Hayden was “wonderful” on set.

Hayden was found “unresponsive” by Zach Hickerson, brother of her on-and-off boyfriend Brian, in a chair in the living room of the Airbnb, according to TMZ.
