Matthew Korfhage is a staff writer and reviewer on WIRED's Gear team, where he focuses on home and kitchen devices that range from air fryers and coffee machines to space heaters, water filters, and beard trimmers. Before joining WIRED in 2024, he covered food, drink, business, culture, and technology for more than a decade at USA Today Network, The Virginian-Pilot, and his hometown newspaper in Portland, Oregon, where he again lives. He holds a masters in writing from Washington University in St. Louis and has received more than a dozen national awards from the Society for Features Journalism. He shared a Collier Prize for a feature about a fatal blizzard in Buffalo, New York. When hes not testing ovens or coffee tech at home, hes probably driving an hour to eat at a restaurant without a telephone.
