GitHub Classroom is now retired as we complete the transition to partner solutions

GitHub Classroom has now reached the end of its journey. Since it launched ten years ago, over 3.73 million students and educators have used Classroom across more than 305,000 unique classroom instances, helping students around the world learn real-world developer skills for free.

Thank you to everyone who taught, learned, contributed, and helped shape what GitHub Classroom became.

As of August 28, 2026, the GitHub Classroom service has been retired, but any accounts, repositories, and organisations you created through Classroom are not affected by this service retirement.

Continuing your courses with our partners

We've partnered with two fantastic organizations that offer the core GitHub Classroom workflows (assignment distribution, auto grading, and GitHub repo integration) plus additional capabilities to further enhance your classroom experience.

Codio is a hands-on learning platform that combines interactive courseware, browser-based coding environments, and auto grading in one place. Instructors get free access - no cost to create curriculum, use the migration tool, or explore the full platform. Higher education institutions that sign an institution agreement with Codio can receive 50 free standard Codio learner licenses for an initial 12-month period. • LMS integration for single sign-on and grade pass back
• Ability to scale from a single course to department-wide adoption
• Cheating prevention and plagiarism detection

Classroom 50 is a free, open-source GitHub Classroom alternative developed by the Fifty Foundation, GitHub’s official open-source partner for educational software tools. Classroom 50 builds on the core Harvard CS50 classroom experience and includes both a command-line interface and a web interface. Some capabilities of this solution include:

• Create individual and group assignments, with or without starter code
• Auto-grade submissions with declarative tests or your own grading scripts
• Leave inline feedback on student work
• Manage rosters, track submissions, and collect scores
