Bug summary
Using matplotlib.backends.backend_qt5.NavigationalToolbar2QT in vertical mode (as opposed to the default horizontal mode) makes is behave wildly when the mouse is in the graph area.
I presume the reason this happens is that the toolbar shows x and y coordinates which are ever changing on mouse movements. Can I somehow turn that off?
I'm going to close this as I don't think there is anything we want to change on the Matplotlib side. Might be worth tweaking the Qt properties a bit so it behaves better in the vertical case, but I don't think we need an open issue to track that (but would merge a PR if one was opened).

That does sound like the correct explanation.
To turn them off pass coordinates=False when you create the toolbar.
