In Matlab, imshow pets you see the data value under the mouse cursor. This would be helpful in Matplotlib. I'm thinking it would go at to bottom of the window where the mouse-position text is.
This seems like it should be easy to add. I'm just not sure where I need to look to add it. If someone can tell me where to look, I'll take a stab at it. Where is the code that does the x=, y= text?
Thanks. Given that someone has already thought of this enough to make that page, is there a reason it's not the default behavior? That is, if I made a pull request that made that the default behavior is there a blanket reason it wouldn't be accepted?
No blanket reason, I don't think. I just think no one has spent enough time
to gracefully implement it. I don't think that there is any philosophical
objections. The feature would have to work regardless of the type of image
(some images are specified strictly as rgb values obtained from reading an
image), and it shouldn't be thrown off by having multiple images in the
axes (should work with whatever is "on top").

This example should be helpful: http://matplotlib.org/examples/api/image_zcoord.html

You also have to be aware of the use of extent and all the subtleties it can introduce.

It is worth knowing about @joferkington's https://github.com/joferkington/mpldatacursor/

Closing as won't fix as I think a general solution will be more complex that it is worth.
