Some scatter markers are not specified in the same manner as the corresponding plot symbol. There should be agreement between the specifications. Here is the list of predefined scatter markers:
's' square
'o' circle
'^' triangle up
'>' triangle right
'v' triangle down
'<' triangle left
'd' diamond
'p' pentagram
'h' hexagon
'8' octagon
'+' plus
'x' cross
And the predefined plot symbols:
. # points
, # pixels
o # circle symbols
^ # triangle up symbols
v # triangle down symbols
< # triangle left symbols
> # triangle right symbols
s # square symbols
+ # plus symbols
x # cross symbols
D # diamond symbols
d # thin diamond symbols
1 # tripod down symbols
Notably, the 'd' marker for scatter corresponds to the 'D' symbol for plot. So for plot, perhaps we should have:
d # diamond symbols
D # thin diamond symbols
Also, it would be nice if we could have the same set of predefined markers/symbols.

This is borderline, but I am pushing it over to the "Feature Requests" category.

We now have the two diamond options, but little d is thin and big D is regular. It would still be nice to have unified symbol specification and generation between Line2D and scatter, so I am leaving this open.
