tricontour and tricontourf were added to mpllot3d a little while back. However, no examples were provided with it. Given that I have no experience with 2D versions of tricontour, I find myself hard-pressed to figure out any good-looking examples to add to the gallery.
There is no point in adding any 3D tricontourf examples until issue #178 is solved. As we stand only the simplest examples render correctly, anything vaguely interesting doesn't. Also, the tricontour(f) code in axes3d.py is overly simplistic, only supporting one of the many 2D tricontour(f) use cases. Plus there are no 3D triplot or tripcolor functions or examples! I'm happy to fix all of this, but I need #178 fixed first; I tried once but got bogged down in the mplot3d code.
@ianthomas23, I just had a thought. Technically, tricontour and tricontourf for mplot3d has not been released. We could still change the call signature for it. I haven't looked to see what the current 2D signatures are, but I would imagine that it is still possible to do.
It is probably quite easy to change the tricontour(f) call signatures, but I'd rather not do it piecemeal. If we have a 3D tricontour(f) then we should also have 3D triplot and tripcolor, as well as examples for them, all in one go. OK, how about if I create a branch to do this and let you know when I'm done, and you can decide how to integrate this into master depending on progress with #178?

tricontour[f] has been in mplot3d for a few releases now with examples. Closing.
