new feature: named figures #99

Description

the following small addition will make it possible to use explicitly named figures in pyplot.figure

Example:

plt.figure("today")
opens new or existing figure with label "today".
In windowed backends, the title of the figure window will be set to "today" instead of Figure 1.
Internally all figures remain tracked using fig.number.

The expected benefit of this patch is to make it easier to switch between multiple figures.

This is a great idea--but where is "the following small addition"?

coming in a day or two...

I've just thought that providing support for plt.close("today") would also be useful.

Ah, OK, I thought maybe you had tried to append a patch in some form but
    it got lost.

One restriction is implied here: a figure must not be named "all",
because that would interfere with plt.close("all").
