Update misleading docs about supported devices (was: add support for EP25 plug) #367

Closed

Description

This is supposed to be a successor to the KP115. It has a much more attractive price point US$35-40 for 4 EP25, as opposed to US$22 for one KP115. Has power monitoring as well as on/off control.
Available in the US

You need to beb more precise what is not working and what type of support you wish to have. If it's working with the kasa app, it will likely work just fine with this library. Are they not working?

You could check if the plugs are still being controlled using port 9999? There are some devices using another encryption method (#267) which uses a different port for discovery but you could try if the plugs are detected using that PR.

Otherwise, there is also another product line (tapo) that is not supported by this library, but the README.md links to other projects providing support for those.

Hi, thanks for replying. I am new at this and I assumed that devices would not work unless they were listed in the readme.
I was waiting to hear about possible support before buying a set of EP25 plugs, but I'll go ahead and get them and try to connect. The Kasa app requires to create an account for EP25, which I wonder if relates to the new encryption method you refer.
I'll mark this issue as closed and reopen if needed.
    Thanks again!

The readme should state that the ones listed in it are just the devices that are definitely known to work with this project, so let's keep this open as a reminder to update the readme :-)

There at least used to be a mode that allowed to skip registering an account in the app allowing to just use to to control the devices locally, but it could be that the app has changed since then.

    Sounds good.

The app requires creating an account for some models. When you try to skip account creation in the app for an EP40, the app goes blank and brings you back to the beginning of device setup page.

This page lists those models, including the EP40. https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/2707/

That was actually what led me to discover this project 😃

Feel free to open a PR to adjust the documentation accordingly 👍 it could be that those devices will require PR #117 to support local communications, but I hope someone can clarify that.

Looks like TP-Link took down the list of devices that require a cloud account. For searchability, as of October 2022:

    HS107, KP200, HS300, KP303, KP400, EP40, KL430, KL430E, Hs210KIT, HS210, HS220, SR20, and all cameras

If you have any of the above, you must create a Kasa account, and the remote control feature will be enabled without the option to disable it.

TP-Link customer support confirmed that EP25 also requires an account and that the above list is now an internal-only resource.

@3xtant this might be answered in the thread and I didn't fully understand. Did the EP25 work?

Sorry, I never explicitly said what happened with my EP25s. Yes, they work! I actually deleted the Kasa app from my phone and I only use the python-kasa method to set up all my new devices.

Worth noting that there exists a new hw version of EP25 which does not currently work with this library: #548

@browngnome make sure you read the thread mentioned above before you buy any new devices for black Friday. It's a bummer that the new devices don't work

@3xtant i appreciate the update and the ping! That is disappointing to hear but I was ready to pick some up so I guess I will look for a different device.
