How To Winterize a Saltwater Pool Without Damaging The Generator
Winterizing a salt water pool takes a little more care than closing a traditional chlorine pool. The main difference is the salt chlorine generator, particularly the cell, which can be damaged by freezing temperatures, scale buildup, or improper startup in spring.
The good news is that protecting it doesnt make the closing process much more complicated. You just need to know when to shut the system down, how to prepare the cell, and what to do before temperatures drop.
Heres how to winterize a saltwater pool properly without damaging the generator.
The Cell Comes Out First
The salt cell is the part you need to protect most carefully during winter. Water expands when it freezes, and any water trapped inside the cell can crack the housing or damage its internal components.
Once the pool is ready to be closed:
- Disconnect the cell at both unions.
- Drain all the water from it.
- Leave it upside down for a few minutes so water trapped between the plates can drain.
- Store it somewhere dry and indoors for the winter.
Youll also need to close the gap left in the plumbing. If your system came with a dummy or blank cell, install it in place of the real one. If not, a suitable piece of PVC can be used to keep the plumbing closed.

Clean It Before Storage
Before putting the cell away, check the plates for scale. Cleaning it now prevents calcium deposits from sitting and hardening throughout the winter.

Hold the cell up to the light and look between the plates. If they look clean and even, you don’t need to do anything else. If you see white or grey deposits, clean them before storage.
Start with plain water. Use a garden hose to flush between the plates from both directions. This is often enough to remove lighter deposits.
If scale remains, use a salt cell cleaner according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If your manufacturer allows diluted muriatic acid for cleaning, follow its specified dilution and contact-time instructions carefully.

Test and hit these numbers:
- pH: 7.27.4, low side of the range
- Total alkalinity: 80120 ppm
- Calcium hardness: 200400 ppm on plaster, lower on vinyl
- Salinity: test and record it

- Blow the water out of the plumbing lines.
- Plug the returns and other openings as required.
- Add pool antifreeze to vulnerable lines when appropriate.
Only use antifreeze made for pools or potable-water plumbing. Never use automotive antifreeze in a swimming pool.
Don’t assume the salt level will be the same when you reopen, either. Salt itself doesn’t evaporate, but rain and melting snow can dilute the pool over winter, particularly under a mesh cover.

Protect Metal Parts From Corrosion
Salt water can speed up corrosion, especially when the pool sits unused for several months. Closing is a good time to inspect any particularly vulnerable metal components.
If your pool has a sacrificial zinc anode, check its condition. Replace it if a large portion has already eroded so it can continue protecting other metal components.
