Workspace creation and user signup disabled

As part of the planned sunset of Firebase Studio, new workspace creation and user signup are now disabled. Existing users can continue to access and work in their existing workspaces until the final sunset on March 22, 2027. We recommend migrating your existing workspaces to Google AI Studio or Google Antigravity. For detailed instructions, see the migration guide.

• Sunset Announcement: We're sunsetting Firebase Studio on March 22, 2027. To continue building and deploying new versions of your app, migrate your Firebase Studio projects to Google AI Studio or Google Antigravity before that date. Learn how to migrate.

  Any apps already deployed to Firebase will continue to run even after the sunset date. Also, all our core Firebase products (like Cloud Firestore, Authentication, App Hosting, etc.) are not impacted by the Firebase Studio sunset.

• Firebase Studio now uses the gemini-2.5-flash-image-preview (Nano Banana) model for image generation.

The App Prototyping agent

• Improved the annotation experience in Prototyper.

• Improved the Select feature by refining the selection logic for Next.js components and improving the positioning of the inspector UI.

Firebase Studio Code view

• Redesigned the Gemini interactive chat toolbar to make it easier to switch between chat threads, and to rename and delete threads.

• Interactive chat now recognizes gemini.md (in addition to GEMINI.md) for loading project-specific instructions and context.

• The inline Gemini chat now provides more precise, character-level code updates, instead of replacing entire blocks of code.

• Added support for configuring and selecting which MCP (Model Context Protocol) tools are enabled for a workspace.

• Fixed a UI bug where two Regenerate Response buttons could appear in interactive chat.

• Corrected a typo in the "Show command output" error message.

• Chat history is now shared between the App Prototyping agent and Gemini in Firebase.

The App Prototyping agent

• The UI for setting up a Firebase project has been improved with multiple steps and expandable sections for better visibility.

Firebase Studio Code view

• Added the IDX.aI.showChatInEditorTab setting to adjust whether the Gemini in Firebase chat window appears in an editor tab or the side panel.

• The Gemini in Firebase chat history UI has been redesigned with a cleaner, more readable look.

• Use the @ symbol to refer to an entire folder when chatting with Gemini in Firebase.

• Use the Firebase Studio: Add MCP Server command in the Command Palette to quickly add an MCP server.

Other improvements

• Changed Fork to Duplicate in the workspace menu.

• Fixed an issue where chat thread updates from the App Prototyping agent could affect other chat sessions.

• Fixed a bug that could cause a crash if the App Prototyping agent history file wasn't found.

• Resolved an error that occurred when attempting to change the workspace folder to a location that is non-existent or not owned by the user.

• Folder icons now render better across chat.

• Updated the context engine's ignore list to exclude .venv directories.

Highlights

• Switch between Ask, Agent, and Agent (Auto-run) mode when using Gemini in Firebase.

• Enhanced the Flutter, Angular, NextJS, React, and Simple HTML templates to create a more streamlined, AI-focused experience. To enable this new view in pre-existing workspaces, search for the IDX.agenticWorkspace setting and set it to true.

• Add and configure a Firebase project directly within the App Prototyping agent by using prompts.

• Duplicate a workspace to create a copy of your code, configuration, and even the Gemini chat history, allowing you to experiment with new ideas without altering your original project.

• Gemini CLI is now preinstalled in Firebase Studio, allowing you to access Gemini directly from the terminal.

The App Prototyping agent

• The App Prototyping agent now displays the commit timestamp alongside the file change summary, providing more context on when changes were made.

• Fixed a bug where images uploaded during the initial blueprint generation were ignored by the App Prototyping agent.

• Added logic to handle potential errors when loading the AI history. This fix detects when a blueprint already exists and prevents your chat history from being cleared.

Firebase Studio Code view

• Integrated many of our templates with a foundational set of AI rules, allowing Gemini to better understand your project's structure and provide more tailored assistance right from the start.

• Search for and reference specific files in your project by typing @ when chatting with Gemini in Firebase.

• Resolved an issue in several project templates where AI rule files (GEMINI.md) were not being recognized due to incorrect capitalization.

• Corrected a configuration issue in the Eleventy template.

• Corrected a pathing issue in the Django template.

• Updated Gemini CLI to improve the authentication flow.

Other improvements

• Corrected the release notes URL in the main Firebase Studio panel.

• We made many improvements to handle edge cases, provide clearer notifications, and boost reliability, especially for large-context prototyping sessions.

• Improved image generation capabilities.

The App Prototyping agent

• Improved how file changes appear, including showing added/removed lines counts and providing a detailed diff view with before/after content.

• The App Prototyping agent can now add carousel and collapsible UI components to apps using Radix UI and Embla Carousel.

• The App Prototyping agent chat and the app preview address bar now show current loading status.

• Generated apps can now use the new Text-To-Speech (TTS) capabilities with the `gemini-2.5-flash-preview-tts` model.

• When your app preview loads, you can start debugging immediately.

• Warnings appear in chat when the prompt or total token count is nearing or has exceeded the model's limits. Also added a "See Files" link to the token usage warning message, allowing you to quickly switch to code view if you're nearing token limits in Prototyping mode.

• Thumbs up/thumbs down feedback added to the Prototyper chat. Help us improve Firebase Studio by providing feedback!

• Many performance and stability improvements for large context prototyping sessions, including prompts with file attachments.

• The App Prototyping agent now prompts for a Gemini API key when required during the app editing flow.

• The App Prototyping agent rollback logic now correctly inserts a message into the history after a git revert, preventing stale code changes from being reapplied.

• App generation processes now respond more effectively when you click Stop during Gemini's thinking process.

• Upgraded the image generation model to improve image generation capabilities.

App previews

• Fixed a few issues that caused app previews to continually reload in some situations.

• App previews automatically refresh after code changes are applied with auto-fix.

Firebase Studio Code view

• When you bring your own API key, Gemini in Firebase in Code view now provides more AI insights and displays "thinking" summaries.

• Added more file paths for Gemini in Firebase to check when looking for AI rules configuration. Gemini in Firebase in Code view now supports the following files in addition to .idx/airules.md and .cursorrules:

• Added a new "Firebase Studio" category to VSCode commands to help manage public ports more intuitively.

• Tab locking behavior in Code view is now more predictable; webview-only groups lock only when not in the first column.

• Fixed several minor issues with the chat interface, including CSS tweaks for the model picker and disabling spellcheck for code input areas.

• Reduced the frequency of toast notifications unless they're truly necessary.

• When importing a GitHub workspace, Firebase Studio now avoids suggesting overly long names that could cause confusing errors.

• Fewer unwanted VM shutdowns: Introduced a heartbeat mechanism to prevent VM shutdowns while you're actively using the system.

Other improvements

• The Firebase dependency in the Next.js template has been bumped to 11.9.1, bringing in various upstream fixes.

• Official Monospace and file icon themes are back, now built directly in the Nix environment.

May 2025

• Firebase Studio now uses Gemini 2.5 for the App Prototyping agent and for the built-in model in Code view chat. Learn more.

• Optimized the App Prototyping agent for mobile. You can now prototype apps directly on your mobile device.

• Improved file change display so that file changes now show in the chat window.

• You can now share quick links to your App Prototyping agent prompt directly in Firebase Studio using the prototypePrompt query parameter. For example, you can craft a link like the following and share: https://studio.firebase.google.com/?prototypePrompt=Create an app that transforms a sketch into a high-quality photograph with Gemini. Try it now.

• When you add Gemini to your apps, Genkit flows can generate images using Gemini's native image generation. Try it now.

We're excited to announce that Project IDX is now part of Firebase Studio! Firebase Studio is an agentic, cloud-based development environment that helps you build and ship production-quality, full-stack AI apps, including APIs, backends, frontends, mobile, and more.

With Firebase Studio, you can use the App Prototyping agent to rapidly prototype and generate AI-forward web apps using multimodal prompts, including natural language, images, and drawing tools.

While Project IDX is now part of Firebase, the core features remain the same, including the ability to build new apps, import existing projects, and work in a familiar Code OSS environment, running fully in the cloud and accessible from your browser.

Highlights

• Interactive Chat (Preview) is now available for everyone! Now when you start a new Interactive Chat thread with Gemini in IDX, it can run commands in your terminal, suggest changes and add new files for you to review with an interactive diff tool, and more!
• We've added documentation on sharing your previews publicly and updated the FAQ on publicly opening ports to simplify the development experience when your backend and frontend are running on different servers or even in different workspaces.

Gemini in IDX

• You can now navigate your prompt history with the up/down arrow keys.
• Gemini now understands more about IDX itself, so if you're having trouble with an IDX feature, try asking it for help.
• Major performance and reliability improvements to Interactive Chat.
• Language detection in Gemini has been improved, so syntax highlighting is more robust and Gemini is less likely to misunderstand which language you are asking about.

Environments, Templates, and Previews

• Added support for non-Expo React Native workspaces.
• Output from onStart and onCreate hooks is is now shown in an output channel, which can help debug malfunctioning hooks for users who write their own dev.nix files.
• The Firebase Data Connect template now uses the public version of the code, available on GitHub. As a result, it will receive more frequent feature updates and bug fixes going forward.
• Log levels for built-in extensions can now be customized, which can help troubleshooting
• Upgraded most templates to Nix 24.05, which in some cases is necessary to get the latest package versions with important updates. A handful of remaining templates will be upgraded in the coming weeks.
• Several templates got more intelligent caching, and will be quicker to start and install new packages.
• The Google Maps template now has all its dependencies preinstalled and no longer needs to install them on launch, leading to much faster startup times.
• Fixed issue where the Nix store would run out of disk space.
• The Astro "View Transitions" template has been removed, since it was removed from the latest Astro release.

Performance and reliability

• Improved startup time for new web workspaces. We are targeting even more improvements in this area going forward.
• Improved reliability of creating or opening a new workspace.
• Improved the reliability of recovery mode, if a workspace ends up in a bad state.

Other improvements

• Fixed a number of UI bugs related to the dashboard's light mode.
• You can now enter a name for workspaces cloned from a git repository upfront.
• Multiple user preferences, such as dashboard visibility, are now persistent, instead of resetting on every visit.
• The UI of the share workspace dialog has been updated to be more intuitive.

Highlights

• Join our new Early Access Program to test and provide feedback on experimental features before they are released into production. Interactive Chat for Gemini in IDX is the first such early access feature; join today to try it out and provide feedback!

• You can now publicly share your previews while your workspace is active with a new "Make Preview Public" button, available from the link menu in the Web Preview toolbar.

• We've just rolled out a brand new web console (e.g. to see your console.log statements, JS errors, etc), complete with an Understand this error integration for Gemini in IDX. Reminder: you can continue using your browser's built-in developer tools for more advanced use cases (debugging network traffic, animations, etc.)

• You can now try Gemini, the Vertex AI SDK for Firebase, Firestore, and Angular all at once, right inside IDX, with a new Gemini sample app from Firebase.

• We've published a blog post that details how to build great get-started experiences powered by IDX custom templates.

• There's now a light theme in the IDX dashboard! While the core editor experience has always supported light, dark, and entirely custom themes, our dashboard has traditionally been exclusively designed for dark mode. • We've made major improvements to Interactive Chat, which is now available in early access!
• The inline assistance panel (Cmd+I or Ctrl+I) now uses a purpose-built AI model for making more fine-grained changes to entire files updates to entire files when editing existing code.
