ADVICE

The Office of the Press Ombudsman can give informal advice and assistance on all aspects of our work to anyone considering making a complaint. We can also give advice to anyone who, while not wishing to make a formal complaint, may seek guidance on how to deal with an issue relating to the press.

While we cannot advise you on the details of how you will make your complaint, we can give specific advice on how the Code of Practise may apply to it.

In some cases, particularly when people find themselves suddenly and unexpectedly the subject of intense media interest, the Press Ombudsman may issue an Advisory Notice to members of the Press Council. This will involve her contacting editors to let them know on a confidential basis the specific wishes a person or family may have in relation to covering an event or situation. This may help if you have been caught up in a tragedy or in distressing events.

Contact the Office if you wish to discuss the need for an Advisory Notice.
