'I never thought I needed one household gadget now I couldn't do without it'

The Daily Star's Assistant Editor Richard Brown is on a journey to becoming a sensible adult, with an air purifier the next step on that path. But is it actually useful?

The BLUEAIR Blue Max 3250i Smart Air Purifier proved to be a relevation

Ill be honest with you; I never thought Id need nor want an air purifier. But on my journey to becoming a semi-functioning member of society, I got hold of a dehumidifier and was blown away by the impact.

So when I was offered the chance to own an air purifier (a smart one at that), I thought it felt like a natural evolution. Im lucky to live in a part of the country which doesnt suffer from a huge amount of pollution but with a dog at home and living on a busy main road, the air quality isnt always perfect.

So I set out to see if, over the course of about a month, the addition of the catchily-titled BLUEAIR Blue Max 3250i Smart Air Purifier would make a big impact to our daily life.

At this point, I should admit that we are those people who let our dog sleep on the bed (onnot in) which made the bedroom feel like a natural spot to set up.

From unboxing to having the Blue Max running took maybe three minutes at most. That included getting it connected to the WiFi network, downloading the accompanying app to my phone and getting it set up. Its beyond simple, which coupled with its sleek, modern design, made it feel incredibly simple and unassuming.

And the impact was pretty much instantaneous. Maybe it was a bit of placebo effect, but with it running, everything feels fresher, the air feels lighter and my sinuses feel free.

The Blue Max currently retails at 149 at Currys and has five different modes.

Among them are three speeds, the fastest of which is so powerful, it can basically double up as a fan, an automatic mode which is how weve predominantly used it, and a night mode which is barely audible when youre trying to drift off.

And while it can all be adjusted on the fly with controls on the top of the purifier, its the app which is comfortably the most convenient way to use it.

With a real-time graph showing the air quality both inside and outside (using your phones location data), the ability to set up a daily schedule and even a child lock for any inquisitive minds who get hold of your phone, it has everything youd need.

It even tells you what percentage of your filters life is left, although after fairly regular use, mine is still on 100%...

The biggest compliment I can pay is that you basically forget it exists. It can just be left to run in the background, unfussy and uncomplicated, while it collects up all the bad stuff floating around.

Three months ago, I didnt think I wanted an air purifier. Now, Id tell anyone to get one without a second thought.

The BLUEAIR Blue Max 3250i Smart Air Purifier is 149 at Currys. If youre after a cheaper option, you could try the Russell Hobbs Mini Aroma air purifier (45 at Currys). Or if youre really willing to splash the cash, the Phillips 8000 Series 3-in-1 Air Purifier also acts as a fan and heater. Its available for 419 at Currys.
