Six in 10 Brits believe a person can look more stylish when wearing glasses, a study has found. Over half (54%) feel that specs are now trendy with one in four now even wearing non-prescription eyewear, simply to make a fashion statement.
And celebrities have played a big part in this, with 23% of glasses-wearers inspired by some of their favourite stars when picking out their own frames.
Research into 2,000 adults discovered the top 15 famous faces considered to wear the most stylish specs with Johnny Depp, Lady Gaga, and Jeff Goldblum topping the list.
Victoria Beckham and Tom Ford also ranked highly, while 57% named Pharrell Williams' glasses as unforgettable, due to their unique frame shape and style. Similarly, 62% said Anna Wintour's shades are particularly memorable, as she is very rarely seen without them.
Bianca Swan, style editor at Specsavers, which commissioned the research ahead of London Fashion Week, said: Everyone on this list is an icon in their own right but their styles have no doubt been enhanced because of their glasses.
Eyewear isnt just an accessory, its a statement that allows individuals to showcase their own unique personality and style. Its great that celebrities are making glasses a popular fashion accessory. The connection between these icons and their glasses shows how people see eyewear differently now.
In a world where experimenting with self-expression can help us feel empowered, the purpose of glasses has become much more than to help us see better they're a celebration of style and individuality.
The study also showed that more than half (56%) think societys general perception of people wearing glasses has become more positive over the last 10 years.
And 70% believe the fashion industry has become more effective in allowing everyone to find a pair of glasses that matches their personal style, according to the OnePoll research.
Whether opting for a classic (35%), subtle (15%), or trendy (10%) eyewear style, 86% believe everyone should feel confident in wearing glasses, no matter what the occasion may be.
Bianca Swan, from Specsavers, added: Looking at these fashion icons, it's clear that glasses aren't just practical they're a key part of personal style, and making a statement about who you are.
Take Anna Wintour, for example her frames are classic, but memorable, as they have become part of her iconic image, and are instantly recognisable.
Its important to remember that whatever glasses you do wear, its a personal choice to you. As long as you feel comfortable and confident, thats all that matters.
