Cue 'cheesy penis syndrome' or if we are getting official smegma. Ah yes, the word you're probably most likely familiar with from secondary school insults or Cards Against Humanity.

However, there's nothing to giggle about when it comes to smegma. But, nothing to be red-faced about either. Recently, a woman's text messages to a date went viral on X, formerly Twitter, accusing him of not showering due to a certain cheesy pong from down below.

We thought we would take a look at smegma and debunk some of the misconceptions surrounding the schlong loving substance. So, we had a chat with Dr. Lawrence Cunningham, from UK Care Guide, for a helping hand to do this.

What is smegma and why does it occur?

"Smegma is a natural substance that comes from dead skin cells, oils, and other bodily fluids, Dr. Lawrence Cunningham told us. It is generally found on the genitals, particularly in men under the foreskin.

"Smegma occurs because of the body's natural skin shedding process. The skin cells in the genital area tend to die off and regenerate at quite a quick pace. If these dead cells aren't cleaned away properly, they can accumulate and mix with the body's natural oils. This is then what leads to smegma."

But why is it referred to as a cheesy penis? Well, it has something to do with the smell and appearance of smegma. While we dont want to put you off your ricotta or camembert, the substance resembles that of cheese both appearance and stench wise.

What is the cheesy part about?

It's not even a childish taunt when we refer to smegma as 'cheesy'. Even the official NHS website states smegma is a "cheesy-looking substance."

Although, the penis is not actually producing cheese, it might certainly look like the dairy favourite. But it won't be something you'll want to spread on your crackers, that's for sure.

The medical professional explained: "The term 'cheesy penis' comes from the appearance and consistency of smegma, which can be similar to a soft cheese. It also has an odour that can be quite strong if it is not regularly cleaned properly."

It's not an STD - but what health implications can it have?

Despite the fact STDs can cause a sore and smelly penis gonorrhoea and chlamydia we are looking at you smegma itself isn't actually an STD. But people often mistake it as one.

Despite this, smegma can cause a whole bunch of health issues if the penis continues to remain uncleaned. The doctor said that the continual build up of smegma can cause an infection and inflammation, including balanitis where the penis becomes red and swollen.

"Smegma is definitely not an STD," urged Dr. Lawrence Cunningham. "It's a naturally occurring substance that can build up on anyone's body, regardless of sexual activity. The misconception likely arises because it can contribute to conditions that are often associated with sexual activity, such as yeast infections.

"In my experience, while smegma itself isn't harmful, but if left uncleaned, it can lead to irritation, inflammation, and infections. A common one is called balanitis.

"However, its worth adding that while it's not an STD, smegma can create an environment that leads to the growth of bacteria and yeast, which can lead to other health issues."

How can this impact sex?

So can smegma effect your bonking session? Well, it can certainly make for an uncomfortable ride and can put your partner off due to the cheesy smell and appearance.

"I've found that smegma can make sex uncomfortable due to the irritation it can cause the male," Dr. Lawrence Cunningham explained. "Additionally, the odour can also be off-putting for a partner, so not a pleasant experience for either party involved."

What should a man do to prevent smegma?

Now we've established the ins and out of smegma, you might well be thinking 'how do I prevent it from happening'. And, fear not, there is no sorcery involved. It's safe to say cleaning everyday keeps the doctor away, and will not lead partners astray!

Dr. Lawrence Cunningham suggested that cleaning the genital area, especially under the foreskin, should be implemented if not already into the daily showering routine.

He said: "I always recommend regular and thorough cleaning of the genital area, particularly under the foreskin. This should be a part of everyone's daily hygiene routine and can easily be done as part of your regular showering (ideally daily)."
