Dune 3 lands release date but fans will have to wait two years

Dune 2 only just released earlier this year but work has begun on the third instalment

The Dune film series has captivated audiences and garnered critical acclaim and box office success, and now a the third instalment has landed a release window.

Despite still being in the early stages of scripting, makers have confirmed the film will be releasing over the Christmas period in 2026, meaning fans still have a long time to wait.

Denis Villeneuve, who is the director of the Dune films, told Digital Spy: "We are in early stages. We are in the right direction.

"There's a lot of work that has been done, but there's a lot of work that needs to be done in order to have something solid to shoot."

Legendary Entertainment CEO Josh Grode added: "I think everybody is very excited and really enjoying this moment, and if Denis gets the script right and he feels that he can deliver another experience on par with what we've just completed, then I don't see why not.

"We have to have all creative stakeholders aligned and support the vision."

The first film followed Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis.

The ensemble cast included Timothe Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard and Dave Bautista.

The film was a tremendous success and minted $406 million worldwide at the box office when it released back in 2021.

The success of the first movie paved the way for Dune: Part Two, which released earlier this year on March 1.

The cast largely remained the same for the second film, but this time round they were joined by actors Austin Butler and Florence Pugh.

Proving how big of a hit the franchise is, Dune: Part Two beat it's predecessor at the box office and garnered a whopping $711 million worldwide.

It became the second highest grossing film of the year so far, behind Disney's Inside Out 2 and the highest grossing movie of director Denis' career.

Dune 3 releases on December 18 2026.
