Oscar winner Steve Spielberg says James Bond producers 'can't afford' him to direct a 007 movie

It's '00 No' from Steven Spielberg if James Bond producers ever come calling as he's a little bitter they turned him down twice in the 1970s

Oscar winner Steven Spielberg has ruled himself out of directing a new James Bond movie because they can't afford him.

The Jaws legend is famously a huge 007 fan and in the 1970s offered his services to the producer to make one. He recalled: I approached (Producer) Cubby Broccoli after Jaws was a big hit. Id always wanted to make a James Bond film from the day I saw Dr. No, so I called Cubby after Jaws and volunteered. I said, If you need a director, I would love to direct one. And he said no."

A few years later James Bond was adding more comedy to the movies with Roger Moore and they wanted to poke fun at another of Spielberg's movies in one of the spy capers.

He explained: "Then Cubby called me again after Close Encounters came out, which was another big hit. A few years later, he said, Wed like to use the five notes in Moonraker. And I said, Ill make you a deal. Ill give you permission to use the five notes if you let me direct a Bond film. And he said no. But I gave him the five notes anyway.

"So they consistently turned me down - at least, Broccoli did. He never explained why he wasnt letting me into the Bond family."

Spielberg was desperate to make an action movie in the mould of Bond and fortunately another pal had an even better option.

Spielberg told the Rest Is Entertainment podcast: "When I told that story to George Lucas in 1977, when we were in Hawaii together getting ready for the release of Star Wars: A New Hope.

"He said, I have something better than Bond. Its called Indiana Smith, which is what it was called at the time.

"He told me the premise of the Indiana Jones series, and thats how I got that job. So if they ever asked me to make a Bond film now, my answer would be: You cant afford me.

Spielberg is back with new movie, Disclosure Day and has reiterated his belief in aliens, because even the armed forces are telling him so.

He explained: Well, one of the things that prompted me to make it was that whistleblowers were now coming from higher levels of authority. They were coming from the United States Air Force. They were coming from Navy pilots.

"They were coming from our intelligence community in Washington. People were blowing the whistle and saying that the government has been hiding, for decades, the truth that we are not alone. And I started believing those believers.
