It's official - nothing beats a good fart gag, after Blazing Saddles was named the "funniest film of all time".

The Mel Brooks 1974 classic, famed for its iconic campfire sequence where a bunch of cowboys create a symphony of flatulence after eating baked beans, knocked Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot off the top spot on a list by the American Film Institute (AFI).

In third place comes Tootsie - Dustin Hoffman's memorable cinematic turn as an actor who disguises himself as a woman to land a role in a daytime soap.

Stanley Kubrick's satire Dr Strangelove and Woody Allen rom-com Annie Hall round off the Top 5 of the all American line-up.

John Cleese sneaks a British film into the list with Foish Called Wanda(Image: BANG Showbiz)

The highest ranking movie with a British connection is John Cleese's 1988 caper A Fish Called Wanda which is an Anglo/US venture starring Kevin Kline, Jamie Lee Curtis and Michael Palin.

Mel Brooks received the honorary recognition after turning 100 over the weekend, and is the only filmmaker with three films in the Top 15 - The Producers (1968) at No11 and Young Frankenstein (1974) at No13.

Brooks has long argued that his film is "far funnier than Some Like It Hot" which starred Jack lemon and Marilyn Monroe.

Bob Gazzale, AFI President responded by saying: Hes right!. Were happy to right this wrong as Mel celebrates his centennial. Its good to be the king, and may he live to be a 2,000 year old man. Happy birthday, Mel!

Mel Brooks recently argued that politically correct culture was the death of comedy and told the BBC that Blazing Saddles would never be green-lit in todays current political climate.
