One Direction star Louis Tomlinson was always stoned while performing with the boyband. The Doncaster lad, on course for No1 with his new solo album, found marijuana to be a calming influence.
He told Apple Music 1: It's always been definitely a help in this like kind of crazy world. Once I've had a joint, everything's going to be all right.
"You could do a lot of those One Direction shows... Never mind a lot, like all of them...
"I'd have a couple of joints before."
The 34-year-old insisted that he always sobered up as soon as he stepped on stage and saw the thousands of adoring fans screaming their names.
He continued: "Im not going to lie though.
"Even the strongest weed in the world, you walk out to a stadium with the crowds like we played... Slaps you around the face.
However, Louis did regret smoking before going on live TV: "I shouldn't have had a joint before I went on Good Morning America.
"That was not a good move. There's still that altercation.
"Yeah, I just had a joint. I was on morning TV. I was thinking, oh, 'I'm going to get absolutely trashed for this'."
"But just for me, my life is so noisy, and I've always been the kind of person who takes a lot of comfort in the quiet times to be honest.
"I think that's the nature of growing up in a big family, you kind of need to, you know."
They even laughed at any onstage misfortunes: "We made mistakes all the time - Our fans liked that stuff, you know.
"If we forgot lyrics, if we fell over on stage. So it meant that the things to get stressed about, they weren't that stressful because if we made those kind of mistakes, it was kind of all right.
"On the One Direction level, that's what made people come to multiple shows. There was a feeling of impromptu that, you know, different things could happen. "
Louis also addressed speculation that his song Dark To Light is about late bandmate Liam Payne and admitted it will be hard for him to perform on tour.
He shared: "There aren't enough words really to explain love like that.
"But it certainly is one of the songs on the record that, pretty much every time I hear it, there'll be a moment where I get goosebumps and drift off in my head and have a little think about it.
"It'll probably be a challenging one to do live, but it is still one that I want to do live."
