Elderly drivers are set to face compulsory tests - and risk losing their licences if they don't pass. This is part of a new road safety strategy devised by the Labour Government, now led by Andy Burnham.
The significant clampdown aims to ensure that those over 70 are safe to continue driving. It's expected to result in more elderly drivers being removed from the roads. Under the proposals, individuals will be required to undergo eyesight tests once they reach 70, reports Birmingham Live.
They must pass these tests to successfully renew their licence and be permitted to continue driving.
This comes after increasing demands for stricter safety measures regarding elderly drivers following several tragedies in recent years. Pensioners may also have to take 'cognitive' tests under measures being considered due to concerns about reaction times and concentration.
Motorists are required to renew their licences once they turn 70 and every three years thereafter. Under the current system, individuals are expected to disclose any medical conditions themselves.
Over 10,000 licences have been revoked or denied renewal since the beginning of last year, according to our investigation. It's likely that stricter rules will cause this number to skyrocket.
Matt Crole-Rees, motoring expert at Confused.com, said: "Sufficient eyesight is crucial for safe driving at any age, as clear vision is essential for spotting hazards and reacting quickly behind the wheel.
"While the Government's consultation on introducing mandatory eye tests for older drivers is a positive step towards improving road safety, it's important to recognise that eyesight can change over time, and many motorists may not realise when their vision no longer meets the legal standard, including being able to read a number plate from 20 metres away."
