A major UK station was "evacuated" after Transport for London (TFL) responded to an alert today (June 23). King's Cross St. Pancras underground station was confirmed to be closed over a "fire alert" as the UK battles a major heatwave.
In a statement from the TFLL, it said: "King's Cross St. Pancras: Closed - This station is closed while we respond to a fire alert. Tickets are being accepted on London Buses."
The station was reportedly closed at around 11:34am. It reopened to the public shortly after 1:40pm but no update was given on the circumstances of the alert. A number of underground users had taken to social media to report the sudden closure and to warn others of services no longer stopping at the station.
One said: "Kings Cross tube station in process of evacuation!! Stay clear."
Another wrote: "My tube bypassed Kings Cross because the station had a fire alert."
A third wrote: "Kings Cross St Pancras station closed 11:30 due to emergency."
The incident comes as passengers and commuters battled intense heat today as London and the UK battle a heatwave with temperatures only expected to rise later this week.
The Met Office said temperatures could reach a maximum of 39C on Thursday (June 25), most likely for somewhere in London or the South East, with higher temperatures possible.
Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge, said: The Met Office is flagging 39C as a headline maximum temperature on Thursday, most likely for somewhere in London or the South East.
Forecast temperature values are indicative and are subject to a slight range either side.
It is possible we could see temperatures higher than the 39C if the final values are at the upper end of our narrow range.
It is important to remember that the temperature value is only one element of this extreme heatwave story.
The other major factor is the high humidity which for many will make the intense heat even harder to endure.
