A section of a major motorway was brought to a complete halt following a road traffic accident. All carriageways on the M1 northbound between junctions J29 and J29a were sealed off on Sunday morning, March 15.
The entrance slip on the M1 northbound at junction 29 was also blocked. Derbyshire Police attended the scene, with National Highways stating: "Due to an ongoing Derbyshire Police-led incident, the M1 is currently closed in both directions within J29A near Staveley.
"TrafficOfficers are on scene to assist with strategic closures on the approach with traffic being diverted via the exit and entry slip roads at this stage." Traffic cameras in the area show extensive tailbacks forming.
Drivers are reportedly facing a congestion of approximately 20 minutes.
For drivers affected by the northbound closure of the M1 between J29 (Chesterfield) and J29A (Bolsover), follow the hollow triangle diversion symbol:
Exit the M1 at Junction 29 and take the A617 westbound towards Chesterfield. At the roundabout with the A61, take the A61 northbound towards Sheffield. Continue on the A61 and then join the A619 eastbound towards Barlborough. Follow signs to rejoin the M1 at Junction 30.
National Highways has also advised motorists to "re-route" their journeys as delay continues on M1.
It said: "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.
"Further information is available from National Highways by visiting our www.trafficengland.com website and travel apps, or via our regional X feed.
"Our 24/7 contact centre team is also available to provide up to the minute information on 0300 123 5000."
In a update that was shared in the last few minutes, National Highways said: "Due to an ongoing Derbyshire police led incident, the M1 remains closed northbound between J29 Chesterfield and J29A near Staveley.
"The southbound carriageway has now been reopened." Traffic conditions are likely to return to normal by 11am.
