A grandad accused of trying to murder his daughter-in-law during a family holiday has been denied bail despite his alleged victim pleading with a judge to release him. Mark Gibbon, 62, was described as a "fantastic grandfather" by Jasmine Wyld, 33.
Gibbon is accused of trying to drown Jasmine by repeatedly holding her underwater in the pool at their rented holiday villa in Florida on August 3. She told investigators later that she "could not breathe and feared she would drown", according to an affidavit from Polk County Sheriff's Office.
But appearing via a video link from England, she reportedly told a court in the US: "I've always felt very safe around Mark and him being around my two children... I'm not afraid of him."
She described him as her "best friend" and said the attempted murder charge came as shock to her, the Times report. She added: "I can only sing his praises for what a fantastic grandfather he is."
Jasmine supported a motion submitted by Gibbon's lawyer seeking his release from custody, subject to a "no violence" order by the court.
But Judge Jalal Harb denied the bail application and said Jasmine's testimony contradicted her sworn statement on the day of the incident.
Gibbon, who is charged with attempted second-degree murder and two counts of battery, did not appear before the judge and remains in custody at Polk County Jail in Bartow, pending another hearing next month.
At a separate hearing last week, he pleaded not guilty to the two charges of battery.
Gibbon was held by cops after he allegedly pushed Jasmine under the water in a swimming pool when a row broke out between the family members in the pool of the holiday home they were renting.
Gibbon, who has split from his wife, now lives alone in a 800,000 semi-detached home in Beaconsfield. Meanwhile Jasmine separated from Gibbon's son Alex - the father of her two young children - in 2021.
Alex was jailed last year for trying to run over his dad while driving a 80,000 Porsche Cayenne in 2023, as well as harassing Jasmine.
Last week it was claimed Jasmine and Gibbon had "secretly dated" for years. Gibbon denied to police that he was in a relationship with Jasmine.
