A Scot who was shot by a Thai drug dealer has alleged that the shooter is in debt to him. Dundee native Aiden McDonald was rushed to hospital after being wounded in Thailand on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the Mae Hong Son province of the country while both men were riding motorbikes. The police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding their altercation, which unfolded outside a hotel.
The shooter, 40 year old local Kitinan Pantarak, took Aiden to the hospital after shooting him in the arm. After receiving treatment for his injuries, Aiden has since been discharged. The 25 year old Scot has now told the Record that his attacker owes him money and held him responsible for the crash.
He stated: "The Thai crashed into me. He owes me money.", reports the Daily Record.
Police probing the incident have charged Pantarak with attempted murder. Police Colonel Phasawin Kaewtai reported: "We received a report that a British man had been shot with a firearm and was injured.
"Officers and investigators went to the scene and found that the British man had already been taken to Pai Hospital. He had sustained an injury to his arm.
"From security camera footage, it was clear there was an altercation between the suspect and the tourist."
The police disclosed that Pantarak claimed to have met Aiden three weeks prior and admitted to selling him drugs.
Kaewtai added: "The suspect said that he had known the British after selling cannabis to him."
Aiden allegedly informed officers that the incident was accidental. Colonel Kaewtai continued: "He did not seem to want to pursue the matter as if he acknowledged his own part in what happened and did not want to escalate it."
He continued: "His injuries are not serious. When I visited yesterday, he was walking around with an IV drip, even going outside to smoke a cigarette, showing no signs of remorse or concern."
Social media posts reveal Aiden has been residing in Thailand for several months. He has kept mates and relatives back home informed with snaps of his adventures across Asia.
In the months before the shooting incident, he shared glimpses of his existence in "paradise" following his journey to Thailand last year.
His online profile displays images of sun-drenched coastlines, gourmet cuisine and snapshots with companions.
Several pictures also feature Aiden posing alongside high-end vehicles.
This February, he uploaded an image as dusk fell over the hills, featuring a vessel on the waterway, with the caption: "Another day in paradise".
A representative for the UK Government's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stated: "We are providing support to a British National injured in Thailand and are in contact with local authorities."
