The dreaded La Nia weather system is coming, and it will leave Britain frozen to the core.

Although we're currently awaiting a heatwave, weather experts are already monitoring what's happening around the world with an eye on the end of the year and how cold it's going to get. And one of the most vital weather systems to look out for is the La Nia one currently building

According to the Met Office, La Nia starts forming in April-June, around every three years, and happens when sea temperature drops out in the equatorial Pacific. When it happens, it normally leads to horrifically cold periods from late-autumn, and all through the winter with many coining it the Beast from the East.

And it seems as if that weather system has been gradually building under the radar . . . which could mean bad news for Brits.

According to the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Centre: It is expected to continue for the next several months, with La Nia favoured to emerge during August-October (70% chance) (in the Southern Hemisphere) and persist into the Northern Hemisphere winter 2024-25 (79% chance during November-January).

Their readings for July 11 continue: The forecast team is also favouring a delayed development of La Nia this month, but is anticipating the transition to occur earlier (August-October). This is, in part, supported by the continuation of below-average subsurface ocean temperatures and near-term forecasts suggesting a resurgence of easterly wind anomalies in July.

When La Nia does hit, it could see record lows around the UK, specifically in Scotland where it hit -27.2c in 1982 and 1995.

And according to Splash news, it could have a severe impact on the UK way before the actual weather system hits, as the growth of the weather system will impact on weather elsewhere educed rainfall in parts of South America, including South Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay, potentially resulting in droughts that adversely affect crop yields this could see a lack of certain products on our shelves towards the end of the year.
