A promising young footballer was killed when a lorry he was travelling in collided with a broken down road sweeper.

Talented Marshall Spelzini, 21, was the passenger in the vehicle when it ploughed into the stationary Iveco Daily road sweeper on the A299 in Kent.

He was travelling in the white Fiat Ducato lorry towards London from Saint Nicholas-at-Wade on February 25.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene but Marshall died at the scene. Both of the drivers were taken to hospital with injuries.

A GoFundMe launched to help Marshall's family cover funeral costs and already raised more than 12,000, the Mirror reports.

His uncle James Walsh wrote on the page: "Losing a loved one is an unimaginable pain, and during this difficult time, we are reaching out for support to help cover the unexpected funeral expenses.

"Marshall was a cherished son, brother, grandson, nephew, uncle, boyfriend and also a friend of many especially within our community, whose massive personality and love touched so many lives. We want to give Marshall the farewell he deserves, but the financial burden is overwhelming and we would like to relieve and support his family during this unexpected heartbreaking time.

"Any contribution, no matter how small, will go directly towards the funeral and easing the strain on the family. If you're unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser would mean the world to us. Thank you for your kindness and support."

Marshall played for Dover Town Wanderers, Betteshanger FC and most recently his boyhood team Cinque Ports FC.

Another one of his former sides, Dover Rangers FC, said its squad was full of "broken hearts".

They said in a statement: "His infectious smile and cheeky personality will certainly be missed by all. Our deepest thoughts and condolences are with Marshall's family, partner Maisie, friends and fellow team mates. Sleep easy Marshall"

Cinque Ports FC said: "Marshall was loved by all that knew him and he will truly be missed. The clubs thoughts and prayers are with his friends, family and partner Maisie as well as the lads at Dover Rangers FC."

Kent Police have appealed for witnesses. Click here to donate to the fundraiser.
