A homeless man known for being aggressive towards women and carrying a knife has reportedly emerged as the key murder suspect over the death of a British woman who was found stuffed in suitcase.
British woman Elizabeth-Jane Ross, 38, was found stuffed into a travel bag which had been left in a carpark in Athens, Greece. Ross was of Christian faith and it is understood she may have been in the area which was known for homelessness for humanitarian reasons.
The woman is believed to have regularly visited Greece over seven years to work for a number of NGOs, to help vulnerable people such as abused women and homeless migrants.
Police in the country are trying to locate a man named Markos in the Kypseli district of Athens, where Ross' remains were discovered. The man is understood to have frequently slept rough in the area where the suitcase and the womans remains were found.
The individual has not been spotted at the location since the area became a crime scene. A citywide manhunt has been launched for Markos as authorities scramble to locate the man. The homeless man has been described as around aged 40, heavily tattooed with black hair and a stocky build.
The Mail reports Markos had a reputation of being a heavy drinker and drug user and was also known for his aggressive and threatening behaviour towards women.
The source added: "We have a lead on a homeless man. We want to question a particular individual, but we are also looking for a number of other people as part of this investigation."
Speaking to the Daily Mail homeless man Hamed Reza, 67, who sleeps near the abandoned car park the woman was found at, claimed Markos is the polices number one suspect.
The homeless man reportedly stated: The police told me and many others that Markos is their number one suspect. They want to find and question him very quickly. They have been asking a lot of people and driving around the area looking for him.
Everybody knows that Markos carries a knife, and local women are scared of him. He was always around this area, even living in the car park, but nobody has seen him since the body was discovered.
He is said to have added: There is a Bulgarian lady who walks past me on the way to work every morning and he tried to attack her once when she was walking past the building after she had been out late one night at 3am.
She told me he came at her with a knife and tried to have sex with her, but she was able to get away.
