Chaos engulfed a major tourist hotspot in London this afternoon as four men were stabbed in broad daylight and a 47-year-old woman was arrested.
The emergency services rushed to the scene on Endell Street near Covent Garden just before 12.30pm. An air ambulance was dispatched to Trafalgar square and all four injured men aged 34, 39, 42, and 52 - were rushed to hospital. They were taken to hospital where two remain with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.The other two victims have been discharged.
A video of the arrest shows two police officers pointing tasers at a woman who appears to be holding a blade. The woman sways side to side as the cops urge her to "put the knife on the floor". The woman is then tackled to the ground.
Also featured in the video is a man alerting police that he has been injured as he gestures to his blood-soaked shirt.
Witnesses said a woman approached members of the public outside Shaftesbury Theatre before stabbing two men in the back. She then ran down Endell street and "stabbed more people", a witness told LBC. It is believed a pair of scissors was used.
Endell Street remained cordoned off with dozens of officers still around the area. At the north end near Shaftesbury Avenue several officers, holding open laptops, carried out inquiries.
Images from the scene show a woman initially stood up with officers aiming tasers at the allegedly suspect. Later, the woman is seen on the ground with officers placing her under arrest. Police can also be heard repeatedly telling her to "put the knife on the floor."
There were many eye-witnesses still standing behind police tape waiting to be interviewed. At the Byron restaurant nearby one diner said the stabbing had happened in the middle of the street between 12.15 and 12.30.
She said: lots of people panicked and fled. I didt see the incident as I was about 50 yards away but people ran.
One woman coming out of the Oasis Sports Centre said: I heard one man shouting shes stabbing people with scissors.
It all seemed very strange. I saw several people running but it all happening at the other end of the street. I had a class booked and went to that and when I came out the street was still sealed off.
A Met Police spokesperson said: At around 12:27hrs on Wednesday, 5 August, police were called to reports of stabbing on Endell Street, Covent Garden. Officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance.
Four men aged 34, 39, 42, and 52 - were found with stab wounds and assessed at the scene by paramedics. They have since been taken to hospital and we await an update on their injuries.
A 47-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and assault. She was taken to custody where she remains.Police remain in the area, with a scene in place on Endell Street and the surrounding areas in Covent Garden.Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting CAD3449/05AUG.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 12:29pm today (5 August) to reports of a stabbing on Endell Street, WC2H.
"We sent an ambulance crew, paramedic in a fast response car and an incident response officer. We also dispatched Londons Air Ambulance.
"We treated four patients at the scene and took them all to a major trauma centre as a priority by road."
