A 35-year-old man has been arrested following the death of a nine-year-old girl who was discovered with severe injuries at an industrial estate in Arbroath.
Police Scotland said the girl was found wounded at Elliot industrial estate at around 12.02am on Monday. She was subsequently rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where she passed away. Her death is being treated as suspicious. Police say they believe the pair where known to each other.
At the industrial estate on Monday morning, a blue forensic tent was erected on a grassy verge outside Halliburton Arbroath manufacturing facility. The area was cordoned off by police with two police vehicles remaining at the scene and officers standing guard.
A woman arrived and placed flowers on the grass.
Lois Speed, who is a councillor for Arbroath East and Lunan, posted on social media, saying the news was "heartbreaking".
She later told Press Association she wished to "express the shock within the community this morning". Ms Speed said: "Really just my thoughts are with the little girl and her family, and those closely affected.
"I don't have much more that I can add or say, other just than express the shock and sympathies with everyone."
Detective superintendent Nicky McGovern said: "Around 12.02am on Monday, August 3 2026, officers were called to Elliot Industrial Estate in Arbroath after a nine-year-old girl was found with serious injuries.
"She was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee where she later died.
"A 35-year-old man has been arrested in connection with her death, which is being treated as suspicious.
"Her family are being supported by specialist officers as inquiries continue."
